Just scanning about, that little brown bit on the central coast of Vietnam represents the Cham speakers who were once a great power before being conquered by the Viets from the North. They still speak a language which is most closely related to the language of Aceh on the Northern tip of Sumatra (who bore the brunt of that recent Tsunami). I'm not sure of the exact history but I presume the Chams must have originated as an Indonesian trading colony or something.

A handy way to compare the similarities between langauges is to use this list of the numbers 1 to 10 in 5000 languages arranged in language families. Here is Austronesian family which while centred in Taiwan was the most widely spread language family in the world before the arrival European colonisation (they were the world's greatest pre-modern navigators).

The descendent languages of this family are still spoken by communities as widely spread apart as Easter Insland in the East and Madagascar in the West (and includes Cham and Indonesian).
